There were mosques everywhere, their domes vivid blue or green, with the symbol of the crescent etched against the darkening blue sky. Everyone was at prayer, it seemed to me, a whole people five times a day praying as naturally as breathing.
In this country faith is absolute and universal. The choice, if there is a choice, is made at birth. Everyone believes. For these people, God is a near neighbour.

Havia mesquitas por toda a parte, com cúpulas de azul ou verde intenso, com o símbolo do crescente gravado contra o céu azul que escurecia. Parecia-me que estavam todos em oração, um povo inteiro a rezar cinco vezes por dia, tão naturalmente como quem respira.
Neste país a fé é absoluta e universal. A escolha, se existe escolha, é feita à nascença. Toda a gente acredita. Para estas pessoas, Deus é um vizinho próximo.
