Drawing the curtains back and opening windows
Every morning now, she feels her years
Grow less and less. Time puts no burden on
Her now she does not need to measure it.
It is acceptance she arranges
And her own life she places in the vase.

ELIZABETH JENNINGS, U.K.
in Old Woman, 1958

Following
the solitude of distances,
a coarsely wound thread
of sidewalk stretched among blocks

Regular as playthings.

The nature of your work
leaves full days discarded
at the entrance to the train.

Seguindo
a solidão das distâncias,
a travessia do passeio agreste e tortuoso
alonga-se entre quarteirões

Alinhados como brinquedos.

A natureza do teu trabalho
deita fora dias inteiros
quando entras para o comboio.

But if sleep it was, of what nature, we can scarcely refrain from asking, are such sleeps as these? Are they remedial measures - trances in which the most galling memories, events that seem likely to cripple life for ever, are brushed with a dark wing which rubs their harshness off and gilds them, even the ugliest and the basest, with a lustre, an incandescence? Has the anger of death to be laid on the tumult of life from time to time lest it rend us asunder? Are we so made that we have to take death in small doses daily or we could not go on with the business of living? And then what strange powers are those that penetrate our most secret ways and change our most treasured possessions without our willing it?

VIRGINIA WOOLF, UK,
in Orlando, 1928
