WILLIAM BLAKE
I like to hole up in hotel suites. I like to turn off the lights and crank the AC. I like temperature-controlled and contained environments. I like to sit in the dark and let my mind race. I was set to meet Bill Stoner the next morning. I ordered a room-service dinner and a big pot of coffee. I turned out the lights and let the redhead take me places.
I knew things about us. I sensed other things. Her death corrupted my imagination and gave me exploitable gifts. She taught me self-sufficiency by negative example. I possessed a self-preserving streak at the height of my self-destruction. My mother gave me the gift and the curse of obsession. It began as curiosity in lieu of childish grief. It flourished as a quest for dark knowledge and mutated into a horrible thirst for sexual and mental stimulation. Obsessive drives almost killed me. A rage to turn my obsessions into something good and useful saved me. I outlived the curse. The gift assumed its final form in language.

Apaguei as luzes e deixei a ruiva levar-me por aí.
Eu sabia coisas sobre nós. E sentia outras. A morte dela  corrompeu a minha imaginação e deu-me certos dons para explorar. Ela ensinou-me a autosuficiência pelo exemplo negativo. A minha mãe deu-me o dom e a maldição da obsessão. Instintos obsessivos quase me mataram.

I remember, in no particular order:
- a shiny inner wrist;
- steam rising from a wet sink as a hot frying pan is laughingly tossed into it;
- gouts of sperm circling a plughole, before being sluiced down the full length of a tall house;
- a river rushing nonsensically upstream, its wave and flow lit by half a dozen chasing torchbeams;
- another river, broad and grey, the direction of its flow disguised by a stiff wind exciting the surface;
- bathwater long gone cold behind a locked door.

This last isn't something I actually saw, but what you end up remembering isn't always the same as what you have witnessed.

Lembro, sem nenhuma ordem definida:
- a face interna de um pulso a brilhar;
- vapor que sobe do lava-loiças molhado quando, entre risos, a frigideira quente é atirada lá para dentro;
- gotas de esperma à volta do ralo, antes de a água as arrastar ao longo duma casa alta;
- um rio que se precipita absurdamente contra a corrente, e o vaivém das águas iluminado por focos que investigam;
- outro rio, grande e cinzento, e a direcção do seu curso mascarada por um vento rijo que encrespa a superfície;

That night a group of us went to Minsterworth in quest of the Severn Bore. Veronica had been alongside me. My brain must have erased it from the record, but now I knew it for a fact. She was there with me. We sat on a damp blanket on a damp riverside holding hands; she had brought a flask of hot chocolate. Innocent days. Moonlight caught the breaking wave as it approached. The others whooped at its arrival, and whooped off after it, chasing into the night with a scatter of intersecting torchbeams. Alone, she and I talked about how impossible things sometimes happened, things you wouldn't believe unless you'd witnessed them for yourself. Our mood was thoughtful, sombre even, rather than ecstatic.
