BAREFOOT FOR A SCORPION

The color of the sac and stinger of the scorpion
was red, and got its beauty from their poison. Bare
feet ache with the threat, the eyes with praise,
the serum for revulsion. Praise be, then, that
the armored teardrop searching on the tail
could miss feet, sting sight, and reconcile
death’s stamping panic with a vision of form,
red at the point where chance and law join.

ALAN DUGAN, E.U.A., 1967

The sensation was part of the general strangeness that made him feel like a man waking from a long sleep to find himself in an unknown country among people of alien tongue. We live in our own souls as in an unmapped region, a few acres of which we have cleared for our habitation; while of the nature of those nearest us we know but the boundaries that march with ours.

EDITH WHARTON, U.K., “The Touchstone”, 1900

Glennard dropped the Spectator and sat looking into the fire. The club was filling up, but he still had to himself the small inner room with its darkening outlook down the rain-streaked prospect of Fifth Avenue. It was all dull and dismal enough, yet a moment earlier his boredom had been perversely tinged by a sense of resentment at the thought that, as things were going, he might in time have to surrender even the despised privilege of boring himself within those particular four walls.

EDITH WHARTON, U.S.A., in The Touchstone, 1900

A VASE OF FLOWERS

The vase is white and would be a cylinder
If a cylinder were wider at the top than at the bottom.
The flowers are red, white and blue.

All contact with the flowers is forbidden.

The white flowers strain upward
Into a pallid air of their references,
Pushed slightly by the red and blue flowers.

If you were going to be jealous of the flowers,
Please forget it.
They mean absolutely nothing to me.

JOHN ASHBERY, U.S.A., “Some Trees”, 1956

Ligeiramente impelidas pelas flores encarnadas e azuis.

Se ias ter ciúmes das flores,
Por favor esquece.
Para mim não significam absolutamente nada.
