Vês aqui a grande máquina do Mundo,

Costard. An I had but one penny in the world, thou shouldst have it to buy gingerbread.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, U.K.,
in "Love's Labour's Lost", 1592

Costard.

Gustave understood nothing of this. He was the sort of person who might, after much hard study, have finally learnt two phrases from the language of flowers: the gladiolus, which when placed at the centre of a bouquet indicates by the number of its blooms the hour for which the rendezvous is set; and the petunia, which announces that a letter has been intercepted. He would understand such rough and practical uses.

JULIAN BARNES, U.K., in "Flaubert's Parrot", 1984

Usos assim, práticos e rudimentares, ele entendia.
